The Church of St. Nicholas on the Old Town Square
Description:
Although the Church of St. Nicholas on Old Town Square is inferior in size and richness of interior decoration to the temple of the same name in Small Strana, it is no less revered among connoisseurs of antiquity. The building of the temple was erected on the site of a Romanesque church belonging to a German settlement of the XIII century.
The Church of St. Nicholas is a wonderful domed structure with a uniquely decided southern facade with two towers. The facade is decorated with sculptures of saints and Czech patrons. Inside the temple is painted with scenes from the life of St. Nicholas. In the center of the church hangs a wonderful not only by its size, but also by grace, a magnificent chandelier with crystal jewelry, made at the Garrakhov glass factory. This is a gift of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II to the local Orthodox Church, which was here in the XIX century. The chandelier has the shape of a Russian imperial crown with appropriate decorations. In this church, bells rang, cast at the expense of the Moscow City Duma. But during the First World War, the Austrian authorities removed the bells and sent for melting.
Currently, the temple is transferred to the Czech Hussite Church.
