Loretan Square
Description:
Loretan Square is one of the most beautiful in Prague, it has existed since the early 18th century. The main buildings are the Loretana complex, the “child” of the most famous family of architects of the Czech Baroque Dietzenhofer, the Cherninsky Palace (Arch. Caratti, Kanka) and the Church of Maria Angelskaya at the current Capuchin monastery.
The Chernin Palace was built for the ambassador of the Czech emperor in Venice Jan Chernin in 1688 and is very reminiscent of Venetian palaces, especially since it was erected and decorated by Italian masters. After 1720, the building was rebuilt under the leadership of the Arch. Kanki, then there was a garden in the Baroque style. The palace was badly damaged during the French occupation of Prague in 1742 and was rebuilt in 1749 under the arch project. Luargo. In the early 20th century the palace was reconstructed. This is the longest Baroque palace building in Prague, the length of its facade is 150 meters (for comparison, the length of the building of the People’s Museum on Wenceslas Square is 104 meters).
On the north side, the square is closed by the Church of the Virgin Mary of Angels and the Capuchin Monastery, the oldest Capuchin monastery in the Czech Republic.
At Christmas in the church of the monastery, according to tradition, a large model of a nursery (bell) with figures in the Baroque style is exhibited.
To the west of the monastery there is a picturesque street "New World" (former suburb of Gradchan) with houses painted in the same Baroque style in fashion 18-19 centuries.
