Tyn temple

The architectural dominant of the Old Town Square of Prague. The construction of the temple began in the XIV century, and was finally completed only at the beginning of the XVI. In total, the work lasted more than 160 years! The temple was repeatedly rebuilt, restored, it had new rooms and decorative elements.

By the beginning of the XV century, the temple became not only the spiritual center of the Old Town, but also the main Hussite church of Prague. His fate was not easy: in 1621 the temple was handed over to the Jesuits, the golden cup, the symbol of the Reformation, and the inscription “Truth conquers” were removed from it. In 1679, the temple suffered from a fire, after which the nave became lower.

However, despite all the trials, today the Tyn temple is one of the most majestic and monumental buildings in Prague. Fronton has a strict Gothic beauty over the tympanum shining statue of the Madonna. Above the facade are two 80-meter towers, built at different times. If you look closely, you can see that the towers are asymmetrical, this is characteristic of the Gothic style. Both towers are crowned by balustrades and corner turrets that make the temple look like a fabulous decoration. The appearance of the temple perfectly harmonizes with the interior decoration, almost completely made in the Baroque style.

About 60 well-known and little-known personalities (among the first astronomer Tycho Brahe) are buried in the Tyn temple, the ashes of great people and heroes of the Czech Republic are kept.
