Giant Gate

Prague Castle, Prague, Czech Republic

Description:

The Giants Gate is a unique structure located at the entrance to Prague Castle, the residence of the President of the Czech Republic. It was built in 1850, its height is about 25 meters. The top of the gate is decorated with the works of the great architect Ignaz Platzer, dating from the late 18th century. They depict figures of fighting giants who try to bring their enemies to their knees. The gates were made of bronze, with some gilded inserts, and the gate itself was made of brick specially brought from the north-west of the country. Between the sculptures of the struggling giants is a magnificent wrought-iron arch topped with a small cross. The Giant Gate became one of the symbols of Prague. They lead to the central courtyard of the residence, so thousands of tourists pass through them every day.

Local legend says that after passing through the Gate of the Giants, a person acquires a mysterious power that fills him with wisdom and self-confidence. Not far from them is another attraction of Prague – the gate of Matias. A reduced copy of these buildings you can buy in any souvenir shop in the city.
