Matiash Gate

Prague Castle, Prague, Czech Republic

Description:

Matias Gate is the first Baroque building located in Prague in front of the entrance to Prague Castle, the residence of the President of the Czech Republic. It was built in 1614 and was a single triumphal arch. It is believed that this magnificent structure was created by the famous court architect Giovanni Maria Filippi, although there is another version that says that the gate was built by Scamozzi. In the original, they were made of a single thick trunk of Moravian birch and welded to two flagpoles (metal racks), 25 meters high.

The gates of Matthias are richly decorated, at the top - with the heraldic coat of arms and the titles of Emperor Matthias, and below, under the cornice - with numerous coats of arms of countries subject to Matthias. On two huge staircases, which start from the gate arch, you can get to various rooms of the West Wing of Prague Castle.

Nowadays, the Matias Gate is one of the many attractions of Prague, which annually attracts thousands of tourists who want to admire its unique design. Not far from them is another attraction of the city - the Gate of the Giants.
