Karlstein Castle

Karlš tejn 172, 267 18 Karlš tejn, Czech Republic

Description:

On a high cliff above the Berounca River stands the Gothic castle Karlstein, owned by Charles IV, who went down in history as the Holy Roman Emperor. Construction of the castle began in 1348 and ended 17 years later. Charles IV arrived there in 1355. Due to the fact that the emperor was an ardent lover of collecting various relics, Karlstein, along with the main functions, was also a treasure trove.

Curiously, Karlstein Castle was never taken. It was twice besieged by the Hussites (in 1427) and the Swedes (in 1620), but all attempts were unsuccessful. This did not prevent the transfer of Karlstein Castle into state ownership in the 20th century, after which its gates were opened to numerous tourists.
