Main railway station
Description:
Prague’s main railway station is located almost in the city center, next to Wenceslas Square.
The station building was opened in 1871. The architect of the project was Joseph Fanta. The station was decorated with an unusual for the Czech Republic arched ceiling over the platform. The station was originally named Franz Joseph I. Then for a long time it was named after Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the President of the United States, who fought for the independence of Czechoslovakia.
In the 80s of the 20th century, a new terminal building appeared near the station, a metro station was opened near the station.
The architectural features of the station are high domes, magnificent stained-glass windows and sculptural figures arranged around the perimeter of the upper part of the building.
In 2010-2011, Prague’s main station was completely renovated and modernized.
