Lake Kamentsove
Lake Kamencove, Chomutov, Czech Republic
Description:
Lake Kamentsove, located in Ustetsk Krai, in the northwest of the Czech Republic, is a unique alum lake and the second largest lake in the country. The area of the lake, which is located at an altitude of 337 meters above sea level and near the town of Khomutov, is 160 square meters. Presumably, it was formed in the XVIII century at the place where clay shales were mined before a major flood.
The lake contains more than 1% alum – salts, which are used as tannins. Such a high content of alum makes the lake waters lifeless, for which it is often called the Dead Sea of the Czech Republic. The clear and clear water of Kamentsove and the sandy banks covered with grass attract tourists from all over the country every summer. Near the lake is the zoo of the city of Chomutov.
