Pampa de Tamarugal National Reserve
Pampa de Tamarugal National Reserve, Tarapaca, Chile
Description:
The Pampa de Tamarugal National Reserve is located on a plateau of the same name, in the Tarapac region, in the province of Tamarugal.
The territory of the reserve exceeds 102 thousand hectares, the average height is 970 meters. The park has a surface divided into three sectors: Sapiga, La Tirana and Pintados. They grow quite homogeneous vegetation, including tamarugo trees and carob trees.
Tamarugo is an interesting tree that grows in salt areas, often multi-barreled. Its leaves and grains are food for the sheep and goats of the Chilean north. In Pampa de Tamarugal there were natural forests that were destroyed for the purpose of extraction and processing of nitrate.
You can get to the reserve all year round along the Pan-American highway Arica - La Serena.
