Chile, Palena province, Los Lagos region, Hornopiren National Park
Description:
Hornopiren National Park was established in 1988 in southern Chile in the province of Palena, Los Lagos region, 105 kilometers from the city of Puerto Montt. The 48,232-hectare park is characterized by an alternation of mountain ranges with high and sharp peaks and deep narrow valleys. The National Park Government Office is located in Hornopiren.
The surface of Hornopyren Park was formed by volcanic activity and glacial activity during the Holocene period. The park has 22,000 hectares of glaciers, mountains and volcanoes. Among the volcanoes stand out volcanoes Yates - 2187 meters and Ornopyren-1572 meters. From the southern slope of the volcano Yates from a height of 1500 meters you can admire the impressive panoramas of the mountains and forests of the park.
There are many lakes in the park, the most famous of which are Lake Pinto Concha, Lake Cabro and Lake Inexplorado. These lakes are characterized by distinctive blue and green shades of water, due to glaciers that lie on their bottom. Also here flows the famous river Blanco - the largest river of the park, with a catchment area of 22,000 hectares, it receives many tributaries flowing from the high mountains. The remaining rivers - the Rio del Este, Esperanza, Tridor, and Mariquita - are much smaller in catchment size, length and flow of water.
Hornopyren Park is home to approximately 25 species of mammals, among which there are valuable rare species such as the Puma, the Kodkod - the smallest wild cat in the world, the Lesser Grison, Chilla Fox, the American Norka and the Padu - the smallest deer in the world.
