Chiu Chiu, the oldest church
30 km northeast of the town of Kalam
Description:
The village with the funny name Chiu Chiu was once called "Little Akatama". Once in these places lived one of the most mysterious and still poorly studied cultures of South America - Atacamamena. And like their ancestors who came to these places in the XII century, the locals continue to lead their usual measured lifestyle.
The town has one of the oldest churches of the colonial era - the Church of St. Francis, built in the early seventeenth century. Its appearance is difficult to call exquisite. Like all the buildings and structures of the city, it deeply captured the spirit and way of life of that time. This small town has a lot to say about Chile’s past.
Chiu Chiu is a surprisingly calm and measured place. Tourists, having made their considerable move through the desert with pleasure rest, walking along the narrow streets and considering stone buildings. Local residents are very friendly and rejoice in tourists as relatives who came from afar.
