Mercado Central Market
Description:
Mercado Central Market is located in the center of Santiago, the capital of Chile. The market was built in 1868 to replace an old building destroyed by fire in 1864. The market building is one of the most interesting examples of metal structures built in the XIX century.
The basis of the building is a construction of cast-iron columns topped with a cast-iron roof of a complex shape. Around the frame were erected brick walls, forming facades. The main feature of the building is a multi-cast roof, in the center of which there is a spire-topped tower. The silhouette of the Mercado Market is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city.
Currently, there is both the market itself and numerous shops, cafes and restaurants. Locals love to spend weekends here, and tourists come here for a variety of delicious and inexpensive food, as well as an indescribable local atmosphere.
