Cape Horn National Park

tierra del fuego, Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos, Chile

Description:

Cape Horn National Park was established in 1945. On the territory of the park is one of the largest in Chile - 63 hectares. Surrounded by green plants, high cliffs and the ocean, many birds, animals and plants live here.

In the park there is a monument to sailors who lost their lives in the fight against the raging ocean. Previously, Cape Horn was considered a difficult place. When the ships were still sailing, this place was the most mysterious among sailors. Ships going to the west, met a strong wind and current, which carried them to the rocks. Ships heading east often found themselves suddenly in thick fog. Within a radius of ten miles from the cape at the bottom of the sea lies at least a hundred sunken ships. To overcome the strait and round Cape Horn was considered a most difficult test for seafarers, and therefore every sailor who made such a transition had the right to wear an earring in his left ear - a symbol of sea maturity and courage.

Today, ships with tourists arrive here without problems, and excursions are held on the territory of the park, fascinatingly telling the history of these places.
