Milodon Cave

Cueva del Milodon, Chile

Description:

In Chilean Patagonia, in the Seno de Ultima Esperanza fjord on the hillside, there is an amazing natural monument. Three interlocking caves under the Devil's Chair rock formation are called Milodon's Caves.

The name Milodon comes from the ancient animal Mylodon darwini, which lived here 8-10 thousand years ago. To imagine the appearance and size of this huge fossil herbivores at the entrance to the cave stands his sculpture.

The first remains were found in these caves in 1896 by Hermann Eberhard, and in the next few years a detailed study of the caves further surprised scientists. In addition to the remains of fossil herbivores, the sites of the first people over 12 millennia old were discovered.

The main cave of Milodon is a long hall of about 200 meters and a height of 30 meters. Stalactites of different size hang from the ceiling. By the way, the hall has incredible acoustics, so tourists are asked without unnecessary need not to raise their voice.

The cave is quite dark, but the large entrance gives enough light to avoid getting lost on the hiking trails. Especially interesting are illuminated the arches of the cave in the rays of the setting sun.
