Beagle Strait

Canal Beagle, Magallanes, Chile

Description:

During a sea walk along the Beagle Strait, you can see seals and penguins, glaciers and a picturesque panorama of wild Chilean nature.

It is noteworthy that the Beagle is the southernmost strait on Earth. It separates the main island of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and the islands of Oste and Navarino to the south, as well as small islets.

On the banks of the strait are the city of Ushuaia and the fishing village of Puerto Toro, which is the southernmost settlement in the world. Having made a stop, you can walk around the village, see what crafts the locals are engaged in, as well as learn the history of the discovery of the strait.

The strait received its name in honor of the ship “Beagle”, on which Charles Darwin during his famous voyage circumnavigated South America, and the surrounding Darwin Strait mountains (Darwin Cordillera) make it a popular tourist destination today.
