Conguillo National Park

Chile, Araucania, Maleco and Cautin, Conguillo National Park

Description:

Conguillo National Park was established in 1950 in Chile, in the Araucania region, 120 kilometers northeast of the city of Temuco. The park, covering an area of 60,832 hectares, is rich in araucarias (the national tree of Chile), lakes, waterfalls, and small rivers. The park has become one of Chile’s favorite and most visited places.

On the territory of the park is Lake Congillo, with its cleanest beaches, where you can relax and swim. It is especially popular during the summer. In winter, the national park becomes a ski resort. Also in the park is one of the highest active volcanoes in Chile - the volcano Llaima, with a leap of 3125 meters. Here you can see impressive traces of lava outpouring, which formed a huge stream after numerous eruptions.

Small rivers such as Blanco, Captren, Punta Negra, Colorado, Longimay, Rio Alipen, El Manzano, Truful Truful, Rio Imperial, El Tique, Aqua Enterrada, El Empedrado cut the entire park. The largest body of water is Lake Conguillo with an area of 780 hectares, having an underground spillway, Lago Verde, Carpten and Laguna Arcoiris, which are included in the hydrological region of Bio Bio Bio and Rio Imperial.

On June 30, 1983, at the request of the Government of Chile, UNESCO decided to create the Araucania Biosphere Reserve, uniting the Conguillo National Park and the Alto Bio Forest Reserve.
