Milidon's Cave

Natales, Magallanes, Chile

Description:

Milodona Cave is located near the town of Puerto Natales in Southern Patagonia, Chile. It is located in the Cerro Benitez mountain system, in a complex consisting of several mountains, caves and mountain formations, called the Devil's Chair. The cave is famous for the fact that in 1895 the explorer Eberhard found in it the remains of an unknown prehistoric animal. Later it turned out that this is a milodon - a giant sloth, somewhat resembling a bear. In honor of the name of the animal, this cave got its name.

Milodon’s Cave is a karst formation reaching a total length of 200 meters, a width of 80 meters and a height of 30 meters. This is the largest cave in the entire Devil’s Chair. There is a main hall and several narrow passages. In the cave, in addition to the skeleton of milodon, the remains of a saber-toothed tiger and other animals were found, as well as traces of ancient people. Exhibits found in archaeological excavations are on display in a small museum next to the cave. At the entrance to the cave is a life-size statue of Milidon. Inside the cave there are paths for tourist excursions. This is a very interesting natural attraction.
