El Angel Reserve
Description:
The El Angel Nature Reserve was established in 1992 to protect 16,000 hectares of natural and unique landscapes, where the main vegetation is the flora of the cold highlands.
Vegetation is typical of most of the Ecuadorian highlands with the exception of the most unusual highland plants Frailejones, which are characteristic of the area and are found in the Karchi region. In addition to this plant, which occupies 85% of the area, there are many unusually beautiful lakes, including the system of Lake Voladero. There are quite convenient mountain trails with signs leading to the lakes where you can find tourist information and camping places.
The reserve can be reached by way from the north of Quito to Tulcan, and then hire a bus or truck and drive for 15 kilometers to where the railway system of the Reserve begins.
