Independence Square
Description:
Independence Square is located in the heart of the old city of Quito - one of the most lively and colorful places of the capital. This is a wonderful place to watch the life of local residents.
Four historic administrative strongholds of the capital of Ecuador overlook the square with their majestic facades: the Presidential Palace, the City Hall, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Cathedral.
In 1906, the Monument of Independence was erected in the central part of the square in honor of the call for independence from the Spanish monarchy, which was pronounced here by the local authorities on August 10, 1809.
The monument was discharged in France in 1898 and transported to Ecuador. And after its installation, the square began to bear the official name - Independence Square.
