Quito

Statue of Virgen del Panesillo

The statue is located in the heart of the city on the hill of El Panesillo

Description:

The statue of the Virgin Mary on the hill of Panesillo is a symbol of Quito, a popular place among citizens and guests of the city. The statue is the tallest aluminum sculpture in the world.

The statue was erected in 1975 under the direction of the Spanish architect Augustine Matorras. The exterior of the statue is a copy of the sculpture of the Virgin Mary, located in the main altar of the Church of St. Francis, 30 centimeters high. This is a story from the Bible where a woman crushes a snake. The sculpture is also a beautiful observation deck, allowing you to see most of the city from a height.
