Nokra Island
Eritrea, Red Sea, Dahlak Archipelago, Nokra Island
Description:
Nokra Island is primarily a former Soviet naval base, now abandoned and empty. Its history is directly related to the military conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia. The Soviet Union provided direct assistance to the government of Ethiopia, thus violating its obligations to Somalia. As a result, Somalia was required to evacuate the Soviet base from its port within three days. The choice for future deployment fell on the island of Nokra, in the Dakhlak archipelago.
In 1991, the Soviet base was disbanded, military equipment hastily removed. Everything they could not take out was handed over to the Ethiopian government, including several ships. They subsequently sank due to the inexperience of the Ethiopian side.
Today, the island of Nokra attracts primarily divers, as well as fans of abandoned places. After all, Soviet buildings still stand there - empty and silent.
