Asmara

Monument to Pushkin

173-18 St, Asmara, Eritrea 19m SV

Description:

The monument to Pushkin today will not surprise many. Except that it is not located on the African continent, in a country, the existence of which even Alexander Sergeyevich could not even suspect.

A new monument to Pushkin was unveiled several years ago in Asmara, the capital of the African country of Eritrea. The prerequisites for this arose immediately after researchers of the Pushkin family tree said that his great-grandfather, the famous Ibrahim Hannibal, was from a local village. This fact so inspired the Eritrean government that they immediately erected a monument to the Russian poet, and even thought about renaming Asmara in the city named after Pushkin.
