Independent travel and view of the city of Tagig!

History of Tagigh

The city of Taguig in the Philippines has a rich and multilayered history spanning prehistoric times, Spanish colonization, the American period, the struggle for independence and modern development.

Pre-Hispanic and Spanish Periods

Tagig was founded in 1587 as an independent municipality within the province of Manila. Before that, it was part of the Kingdom of Tondo and served as an important trading and fishing center. In 1587, the Spaniards handed control of Tagig to the Augustinians for the Christianization of the local population. At that time, there were nine barrangai (districts) in Tagig: Bagumbayan, Ususan, Hagonoy, Wawa, Bambang, Toctocan (now Tuktukan), Sta. Ana, Palingon and Tipas.

American period

After Spanish colonization, the Philippines came under US control. In 1900, Tagig was declared an independent municipality by General Decree No. 4. Two years later, in 1902, Tagig, Muntinlupa and Pateros were merged into one municipality, with Tagig becoming the administrative center.

Modern period

In 1975, as part of the local government reform, Tagig was withdrawn from Rizal Province and incorporated into the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) through Presidential Decree No. 824.

In 2004, after the referendum results were revised, Tagig officially became a city.

In 2008, Tagig created ten new barrangai, increasing their number from 18 to 28.

Today, Tagig is known as "Probinsyudad" - a combination of the words "province" and "city", reflecting its unique combination of urban infrastructure and rural life.
