Zamboanga International Airport
Description:
Zamboanga International Airport is the main airport of the region, fully serving the city of Zamboanga on the island of Mindanao, Philippines. It is the third busiest airport on the island. It is preceded only by Francisco Bangoy International Airport (Davao) and Lumbia Airport (Cagayan de Oro). The area of Zamboanga Airport is 240 hectares.
The Philippine Civil Aviation Authority, which handles all but the largest international airports, classifies Zamboanga Airport as an international airport.
The history of Zamboanga airport began with the American airfield Moret, built north of Zamboanga in 1945, when the Americans landed in this location. With later improvements, the airport was used for short-haul international connections, mainly to Malaysia.
Currently, work is underway to improve the airport, plans to purchase an additional 175 hectares of land, expand and lengthen the runway and taxiway. The airport hopes to attract more international airlines.
