France

Holiday of reading

Description:

Le temps des livres (Time of Books)
This is a completely unique holiday. No other country in the world hosts such large-scale events dedicated to literature and books as France.

The first reading festival was held in 1989 at the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture and was received with great enthusiasm by the French public. After some time, it was included in the calendar of annual cultural events in the country, and is now celebrated in the second half of October.

The three-day program of the holiday includes meetings with writers, poets, exhibitions and presentations of books, book fairs, scientific conferences and seminars. These days, people give each other books, donate them to libraries. All radio and television programs are devoted to literature and writers, numerous materials dedicated to them are published in newspapers. In general, the whole country lives three days a year solely for literary interests. All other problems recede into the background.
