Castle of Angers
Promenade Jean Turc, Angers, France
Description:
The castle of Angers is a majestic medieval defensive structure of irregular shape on the embankment of the river Men. The fortress was built in the XI century on the site of an already existing wooden fortification. From the beginning of the XII to the end of the XVI century, the castle was surrounded by a massive stone wall with 17 round towers in the Gothic style, which in 1574 were demolished to the level of walls by order of Henry III and were no longer restored.
By the way, during the Second World War, the citadel was practically not involved, and therefore came to us in good condition. Particularly noteworthy are the famous tapestries "Angerian Apocalypse", dating from the XIV century. A total of 64 tapestries remain. In the courtyard there is a small Gothic palace, a chapel and a picturesque mini-park. On the territory of the Chateau there are excursions daily throughout the year.
