Church of Saint-Trophim
4-6 Place de la Republique, Arles, France
Description:
The Church of Saint-Trophime is one of the few buildings that connect our modernity with antiquity. The church is located in the city of Arles, its facade overlooks the Republic Square. There is a town hall nearby.
The magnificence of architecture is amazing. The entrance is decorated with a vault, very reminiscent of the Roman triumphal arch. This portal was the boundary between two worlds - the sacred and the secular. Above the tall wooden doors, decorated with wrought-iron pattern, are 12 apostles, and above them are Jesus and the symbols of the Evangelists. Among them are a winged bull, an angel, a winged lion, an eagle. To the right of Jesus Christ are chosen preachers, and to the left are sinners whose souls have gone to hell.
The courtyard is a beautiful part. All the capitals of the columns are decorated with plant ornament, as well as scenes from the New and Old Testaments. But behind the courtyard there is a room in which Obusson tapestries with images of scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary are preserved.
