Kamarg Reserve

Mas du Pont de Rousty, 13200 Arles, France

Description:

The reserve of Camargue is located in the south of France in the coastal zone of the Provence region. It is one of only two nature reserves in Europe where pink flamingos can be found in their natural habitat. But this attracts tourists not only. Camargue is more than 150 thousand hectares of land, some of which are wetlands. According to most scientists, the Rhone River Delta, in which the Camargue is located, was formed 5,000 years ago. Each year, the river brings a lot of silt and gravel to the shore, making the land fertile. Here grow several types of lavender, juniper, tamarisk, meadow grasses and flowers, there are real rice fields, many coniferous and deciduous trees.

The Camargue is primarily known for its white horses and black bulls. Horse herds lead a wild existence, they are only observed by specialists of the local biological station. Periodically they are rounded up for veterinary procedures, the rest of the time the horses are free. Their color is remarkable: being born crows or bays, gradually they become so pale gray that they seem absolutely snow-white.

A regional nature park on this site was established in 1970. The park is a national reserve. On its territory you can come to engage in photo hunting for local animals or swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
