Ajaccio

Foch Square

Ajaccio, Corsica, France

Description:

The etymology of the name of the square has very deep roots. Prior to its renaming in honor of the French field marshal, Place Foch was commonly known as Piazza D'Olmou - Older Square. Later, the square was named Place de Palmière in honor of the magnificent palm trees that adorned the boundaries of the square.

Place Foch is located in the heart of Ajaccio in front of the municipality building. Built during the Second Empire, the square was the main starting point for the road that leads to the gates of the old Genoese town.

The place boasts a statue of Napoleon Bonaparte in the image of the Roman Prime Minister. He's wearing a toga and his hand is on the rumpel. Four lions sit at the king’s feet and seem to be guarding him.
