The Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God
20 Rue Notre Dame, 20,000 Ajaccio, France
Description:
The cathedral was created between 1577 and 1593 and belongs to the project of the Italian architect Giacomo della Porta. Built to replace the former St. Croix Cathedral, destroyed in 1553, and to make room for the development of the city's defenses. Historical monument since October 30, 1906.
On July 21, 1771, Napoleon Bonaparte was baptized here. According to his will, the emperor wanted to be buried in Ajaccio Cathedral in Corsica.
The building was built in the style of the Counter-Reformation era with a Baroque facade. It has seven side chapels, but the following three are the most outstanding: the chapel of the Blessed Virgin of Mercy, the chapel of Our Lady of the Rose, the chapel of the Madonna Pianto.
