Monument to the Girondis

Esplanade Kencons, 33000 Bordeaux, France

Description:

The business card of Bordeaux is the famous monument to the Girondins. Construction of the monument began in 1894 and continued until 1902. In the plan of the monument were included the main sculptures depicting 8 deputies of Gironde, but to translate the idea into work – and did not happen.

The monument impresses with its size and original appearance. It is a fountain in the middle, which is a 50-meter column. The top of the column is crowned by a bronze statue of winged Liberty, and the bottom is decorated with unusual figures: the Triumph of the Republic, the Triumph of Concord, a Gallic rooster and two fountains of bronze. Due to the external similarity of the monument to the column, the locals call it the Girondins Column.

In 1989, a memorial plaque with the names of Gironde deputies was installed on the monument. And in 2004, the monument was awarded the status of a historical monument of France.

Today, the monument to the Girondins is one of the main decorations of the city, which tourists like to visit so often.
