Kings and Cabbage
Description:
On the border of the two regions, 70 km from Lyon is the city of Burk-en-Bress.
Created once on the site of a Roman settlement, this city is famous for its monastery Bru, as well as the royal “chapel”, which became the “hymn of love” of Margaret of Austria to her early departed and beloved husband. Made in the style of "Fiery Gothic", the monastery was built in the XVI century. In the majestic cathedral are the royal tombs of Prince Philip the Beautiful, Count of Savoy, his wife Margaret of Austria and her mother Margaret of Bourbon. Within the walls of the monastery there is a beautiful collection of paintings, dishes and furniture of this era.
In the first half of the day there is a visit to the museum.
After lunch at a typical regional restaurant, we will be transported from the royal monastery to a village farm of the same time.
Once such farms were distributed throughout France, but only here, in the Bress region, a special farm was created, the main part of which was a hearth, striking in its size and design (diameter 4 meters, height almost 6 m).
He served not only for his intended purpose - cooking, heating the home, but also a place of worship and family holidays. There are only 32 such buildings in France.
Many of them remain in private ownership. A visit to the museum with comments reveals amazing aspects of the life and life of French peasants, in many ways similar, and at the same time completely unlike the life of the Slavs and Russians of this era.
Here everything has meaning, clothes and shoes (wooden cloths for various purposes), here even created its own headdress, reminiscent of... hearth, that very Saracen stove.
