Independent travel and view of the city of Dieppe! History of the city of Dieppe Dieppe is a port city on the...
Dieppe is a port city on the English Channel in the Normandy region, Seine-Maritime Department. It is located about 170 km from Paris and about 60 km from Rouen. Today it is a popular resort, fishing port and a memorable place for historians, especially because of the tragic events of World War II.
Early Times and the Middle Ages
The name Dieppe comes from the Old Norman word "diep" - "deep", which reflects the features of the bay: in this place the English Channel forms a natural deep harbor, convenient for ships.
Until the X century, the territory was sparsely populated, but after the Norman conquests, a fishing village was formed here.
XI-XII centuries
In the XI century, Dieppe was already known as the port of the Duchy of Normandy. From his harbour came ships that participated in the Norman expeditions to England. After the conquest of England (1066), the port became an important trading center between the two banks of the English Channel.
By the XII century, fortifications appeared here, and trade in fish, salt and wool made the city prosperous.
XV-XVI centuries - the era of great discoveries
In the XV century, during the Hundred Years' War, Dieppe was attacked by the British. The city was destroyed in 1443 but later rebuilt.
In the XVI century Dieppe became one of the centers of French navigation and colonial expeditions. From here came ships exploring the west coast of Africa, Madagascar and Canada.
Famous Dieppe seafarers:
Jean Cousin – supposedly reached the coast of America to Columbus
Jean Ango is the richest shipowner and financier of marine expeditions, whose ships sailed to Brazil and East India.
At this time, the city developed a school of cartography - the so-called Dieppe maps were famous for their accuracy and art. Some of them are now stored in museums around the world.
XVII-XVIII centuries – War and Revival
In 1694, during the War of the Augsburg League, the English fleet bombed Dieppe, almost completely destroying the city. Louis XIV commissioned the architect Antoine de Corbuson to restore it in the style of classicism. The city acquired a modern grid of streets, which has survived to this day.
In the XVIII century Dieppe again flourished as a trading port, and later became a fashionable resort. Here rested nobility, including King Louis-Philippe, and the city became one of the first seaside resorts in France, the predecessor of Deauville and Trouville.
nineteenth century
In 1824, Dieppe became the first French seaside resort, where they began to swim "in English" - in the sea.
There were hotels, casinos, promenade.
The development of the railway (the Paris-Diepp line) made the city accessible to Parisians.
World War II
The most tragic event in Dieppe's history was the Allied raid on August 19, 1942, known as Operation Jubilee.
About 6,000 soldiers (mostly Canadians) tried to take over the port to test the tactics of amphibious assault. The operation ended in disaster:
Of the 6,000 participants, about 3,600 were killed, wounded or captured.
The city suffered greatly;
However, the lessons learned later helped to prepare for the Normandy landing in 1944.
Every year in Dieppe, a Canadian ceremony is held to commemorate the dead.
Modern Dieppe
Today, Dieppe is:
a picturesque resort and port city;
fishing industry (especially scallop mining - coquilles Saint-Jacques);
Museum in the castle of Dieppe (Château de Dieppe) - a collection of ship models, maps, ivory, paintings (including Monet and Boudien);

Sea, beaches and gastronomy
The main pride of the city is its wide pebble beach, protected by white Norman cliffs. From here there are stunning panoramas of the sea and an ancient castle that rises on a hill.
Dieppe is known as the capital of sea scallops (coquilles Saint-Jacques). Every October there is a festival of scallops and sea delicacies, turning the city into a real festival of tastes. On this day, the aroma of the sea, music and fun reigns on the streets.
History and sights
Dieppe Castle (Château de Dieppe) is a symbol of the city, towering above the sea. Inside is a museum with an exhibition of paintings, models of ships, ivory products and marine paraphernalia.
