Dukes' palace
Place de la Lib ration, 21000 Dijon, France
Description:
The Palace of the Dukes, located in the center of the capital of Burgundy, was in the past the residence of the powerful and militant dukes of Burgundy. The oldest part of the palace is the so-called Bar Tower. Its construction began in 1365 under Philip the Brave, who received such a nickname for his courage in the battle with the British at Poitiers.
In the palace there are lush Gothic tombstones of two dukes of Burgundy - Philip the Brave and John the Fearless, made by master Sluter. They were moved to the Dijon Palace from the Shanmol monastery, which was abolished. Most of the surviving buildings of the complex were built in the XVII-XVIII centuries and made in the style of French classicism. Now in the Palace of the Dukes is the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts, in the collection of which there are rare examples of Old French and Old Netherlands painting.
