Palace of the Dukes in Dijon

Place de la Lib ration, 21000 Dijon, France

Description:

The palace was built in several stages, starting in 1365, when Philip the Bold received the Duchy of Burgundy from his father as a gift. The Bara Tower, named after Duke Rene of Anjou (Duke of Bar and Lorraine) is the only one that survives today from the original building. The second tower decorating the palace was built during the reign of Philip the Good in the middle of the XV century. It is called the tower of the terrace because of the flat roof, climbing to which on the ancient spiral staircase you can see the picturesque panorama of Dijon. The facade of the palace - a fine example of classicism - was created under Louis XIV, at the same time the western wing was built. Under Louis XV, the building was greatly expanded on both sides by neo-Gothic extensions.

Today, in the eastern wing of the palace there is an exposition of the Museum of Fine Arts with a rich collection of sculpture and painting. In the magnificent Guards Hall there are two tombs of the Dukes of Valois: Philip the Bold and his son John the Fearless.

Interestingly, the palace became the birthplace of the famous French Order of the Golden Fleece.

It was here, in the palace chapel, that Philip the Good announced the decree on its establishment.
