English Channel

Lille, France, Pl. S bastopol

Description:

The English Channel is a strait connecting Great Britain and France. The name comes from the French word “la Mancne”, which means “sleeve”. The strait looks like the shape of a sleeve. However, in the English version, this place is called the English Channel. Where the English name came from is unknown.

The channel is 578 kilometers long, the smallest depth in the fairway is 23.5 meters. The third longest railway tunnel in the world passes through the strait.

Ideas to connect the land of Britain and the mainland were developed since 1802. They proposed to build a giant bridge, pour islands, dig a tunnel. We stopped at the last one.

The Eurotunnel under the strait was opened in 1994 and is about 52 kilometers long. The land that formed after the drilling of the tunnel served as the material for the creation of the British artificial island of Shakespeare.
