Lérins
Chemin de Ceinture, Cannes, France
Description:
The Lérins Islands are two islands, St. Marguerite and St. Honore. On the island of St. Margherite is the main attraction - Fort Royal, built in the XVII century. "Iron prison" - this name was long worn by a military fort, which protected the island from pirate raids. However, due to the fact that in this fortress there was a prisoner of the "iron mask", Fort Royal and received a second name. Today there is a unique Museum of the Sea.
On the island of St. Honore is the Abbey of Lérins, located in the oldest monastery, built in 410. The original architecture of the monastery is only partially preserved, as the building was destroyed several times and rebuilt, but in a different style. Today, the facade of the monastery reflects the Romanesque style. However, the chapels located near the monastery and the chapel retained the style of the XI century.
It is worth noting that St. Honor has a "zone of tranquility", where all visitors are strictly forbidden to enter. This is where monks lead a reclusive lifestyle. For tourists, there is a bypass Gothic gallery located along the building, as well as a monastery church and museum. It is noteworthy that the main exhibits in the museum are medieval manuscripts.
Both islands offer not only picturesque views of the sea, but also the mainland, a ferry connecting the medieval era with modernity, in the evening will take you back to Cannes.
