Church of St. Bruno

56 Rue Pierre Dupont, 69001 Lyon, France

Description:

The Church of St. Bruno is located on a hill, in the historic quarter of Croix Rouss, famous in the Middle Ages for its traditions of weaving and silk production. This temple, built in the XVI century for the monks of the Cartesian order, is the only Baroque church in Lyon.

From the original facade of the church to the present day, only an oval-shaped window located at the second floor level has been preserved. In 1870, when the church opened to parishioners, columns framing the window were added, as well as a pediment with a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. At the same time, Ionic columns and Doric pilasters appeared at the entrance. In the niche of the third floor was installed a statue of St. Bruno of Cologne. Around the same time, an organ appeared in the temple, the sound of which is considered one of the richest and most powerful in Lyon. The interior of the temple also has sculptures of the XVII century, among which there is a statue of St. John the Baptist. The author of the sculptures was the French sculptor Jacques Sarazen, who became famous thanks to his sculpture, made to decorate the main altar of the Paris church of Saint-Nicolas de Champs.
