Fountain on Jacobin Square
Description:
Jacobins Square is decorated with a complex fountain-monument “Lyon – who glorified him” (1877). Under the dome of the temple-rotunda are the figures of four fellow citizens - architect, engraver, sculptor and painter.
In the old days, on the site of the fountain there was a well to provide the city with water, then a fountain on which the statue of the Prefect Vesse stood. The modern fountain was designed in 1866 by sculptor Charles Delaplanche and built in 1877 with the help of architect Gaspar Andre. The fountain was called “From Lyon to those who created it.”
The fountain to Lyon masters depicts a temple, in the niches of which there are masters of different eras with their tools. These are: the architect of the XVI century Philibert Delorme, the artist of the XIX century Hippolyte Flandren, the sculptor of the XVIII century Guillaume Cousteau and the engraver of the XVII century Gerard Audrand.
