The Cathedral of John the Baptist

Place Saint-Jean, 69005, Lyon, France

Description:

Cath drale Saint-Jean Baptiste is the ancient Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which is located in the Old Town, above the shore of Sonja. Since the building is more than a thousand years old, it perfectly complements the panorama of ancient buildings in this part of Lyon.

The cathedral impresses with its architecture: here, at different times, two styles were used - Romanesque and Gothic. The first components of the building were the lower part of the aspid, two side chapels and a transverse nave. The final completion of the temple took place in 1480. The lower part of the facade is decorated with sculptural medallions depicting zodiac signs, as well as fieldwork.

The majesty of the cathedral is given by high columns and round windows - roses and stained glass windows, which depict episodes of the XV-XVI century and adjacent to the southern wall of the temple. To decorate the facade of the tower, vegetable ornament was used - these are grape leaves, and even cabbage leaves.

The ancient building of the cathedral is decorated with an active astronomical clock that shows not only the exact time, but also the position of the moon and the sun, as well as the rising of the brightest stars above the city.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest and most important in Lyon.
