Avignon as Pont du Gard
Description:
Surrounded by beautiful jagged walls stretching for more than 4 km, Avignon is one of the most beautiful cities of Provence. Once a papal residence, the city is rich in numerous treasures, but none of them can compare with the Papal Palace, the largest Gothic palace in Europe, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Known for its annual theatre festival, Avignon is both a campus and an ideal starting point for exploring the entire region. In France and abroad, Avignon is best known for its legendary Saint-Benese Bridge. In 2000, Avignon was chosen as the European Capital of Culture.
A jewel of ancient architecture, the Pont du Gard aqueduct is one of the most beautiful Roman structures in the world. Discover a monument in the heart of Provence.
Pont du Gard is an aqueduct built by the Romans in the first century AD. Unique in its size, the bridge rises 49 meters, being the tallest ancient bridge in the world. It consists of arcades located in three tiers (6 arches form the lower tier, 11 arches - the middle tier, and the upper tier originally included 47 small arches), which is also a rare structure of that era. More than a thousand people participated in the construction of this colossal monument, built in just 5 years!
