Mustier - Valjansol - Verdon
Description:
The village of Moustier Sainte-Marie is located at the beginning of the Verdon Canyon, in the department of the Alps of Upper Provence. It is one of the most beautiful villages in France.
It is located at the intersection of two “roads”: the Grand Canyon of Verdon and the Lavender Road, passing along the Valensole plateau. Mustier is famous all over the world for its unique faience, to this day painted in hand.
The village appeared in the 5th century, when the monks settled in grottoes of tufa and built a monastery (6th century). This connection with religion is reflected in the name of the village – Mustier from Monasterio.
Notre Dame de Beauvoir was built in the 5th century and became a place of pilgrimage.
Above the village, on a chain between the tops of two mountains a few tens of meters from the ground, hangs a star. According to legend, it appeared as a result of the fulfillment of the oath given by Chevalier Blacas, who was captured by the Saracens during the crusade and promised to erect a monument to the Blessed Virgin if he ever returned to his native land.
The settlement became very famous in the 17th-18th centuries due to the production of faience products. It all began with the arrival of a pilgrim from the Italian city of Fajanza in Mustier. He told the secret of making beautiful white enamel to one of the local potters. The combination of this white enamel with the blue “from Mustier” gave rise to the famous faience. Local faience has become a decoration of more than one royal table.
