Cathedral de la Major
Place de la Major, Marseille, France
Description:
One of the attractions of Marseille is the Cathedral de la Major. This is the oldest church in the city. Its construction was carried out between 1852 and 1896 on the site, which existed in the V century church. This Roman Catholic cathedral, located on a hill overlooking the Old Port, became a national monument of France.
The architecture of the Cathedral de la Major is a combination of Byzantine-Roman style, designed by Leon Vaudoisier and Henri-Jacques Esp rendieu. Its dimensions are impressive - it is 470 meters in length, and the front towers reach a height of almost 60 meters. The main, central dome, rises 70 meters. Stone, dark gray and white strip masonry makes the cathedral even more original and attractive. It can be said that its interior resembles an Eastern church. On the walls inside the temple there are unique frescoes and the whole situation is very interesting.
Near de la Major in the XIX century, the Cathedral of Cath drale Sainte-Marie-Majeure was built.
Currently, the Cathedral de la Major operates and can be visited freely, it also houses the residence of the Archbishop of Marseille.
