Canebier Street

France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Department of Bouches-du-Rhône, Marseille, Rue Canebière

Description:

Canebière is one of the main streets of Marseille, descending from the Reform quarter to the Old Port. Formed by the union of three ancient streets, it is the hallmark of the city. The name of the street comes from the local name of hemp. Harmful habits have nothing to do with it - on Canebière they traded slings and ropes woven from the stems of hemp, for which there was a great demand in the port of Marseille.

For the first time Canebière is mentioned in the records of the seventeenth century, after the reorganization of the city initiated by order of Louis XIV. Subsequently, the street was repeatedly expanded, while demolished many old buildings, however, Canabier largely retained the ceremonial appearance of the heyday of the colonies and the Second Empire. Architecture monuments are recognized as the beautiful buildings of the Opera House of Marseille and the exchange located on Canebière, the former hotels of the Louvre and de la Paix. On the street are the Maritime Museum and Museum of the history of Marseille.

Interestingly, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the street received a new nickname from English sailors who came to Marseille - they called Canebière - "can of beer" or a can of beer, hinting at the huge number of taverns located on the street.
