Museum of Ceramics

134 Avenue Clô t Bey, 13008 Marseille, France

About the company:

The Museum of Ceramics was opened in June 1995 in a fully restored nineteenth-century castle called Château Pastra. The museum is located on the territory of a beautiful ancient park, and from its second floor there is a sea view.

The exposition is based on almost one and a half thousand ceramic, porcelain and glass products that completely recreate the history of the development of this art. The oldest exhibits belong to the Neolithic era. There is a special gallery where French ceramics of the XVIII century are presented. Especially beloved by visitors are the halls where porcelain dishes of the XVII-XVIII centuries are presented: fine-working tea sets, vases, glasses, hand-painted plates with exquisite plant patterns and intricate ornaments. There are dishes of French, German, Scandinavian and Chinese masters. A large section is devoted to the history of the development of ceramics in the XX century, when sophistication largely gave way to functionality.

Now the collection of the Museum of Ceramics in Marseille is considered one of the best in Europe. Starting in June 2013, it is planned to exhibit the collection in the castle of Bareli.
