Saint-Pierre Cathedral
6 rue de-l'Abb -Marcel-Montels, 34,000 Montpellier, France
Description:
The architecture of Montpellier amazes with its diversity - there are unique ancient mansions of the XVIII century, which are perfectly inscribed in the space of narrow medieval streets. The pearl of the historical center of Montpellier is the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, which is deservedly included in the list of real treasures of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The Cathedral of Saint Pierre is included in the list of national monuments of France. Located in the heart of the city, it is administered by the Roman Catholic Church and is the residence of the Archbishop of Montpellier.
The church that preceded the appearance on this site of the cathedral became part of the monastery of St. Beno, founded in 1364, and in 1536 it received the status of a cathedral. During the religious wars that broke out in the sixteenth century, the church was seriously damaged by both Catholics and Protestants. The church acquired its present appearance in the XVII century, when it was rebuilt.
