Church of Saint Joan of Arc
Rue Grammond, 11, Nice, France
Description:
The Church of St. Joan of Arc (Eglise De Sainte Jeanne D'arc) is a Roman Catholic parish church located in Nice, France. The church is known for its original architecture. It is dedicated to the national heroine of France Joan of Arc. The style of this church is the subject of controversy among Nice residents, as many consider it ugly and also call it "beze" for its dominant white color.
The history of the church of St. Joan of Arc begins in 1914, when Louis Castel built a crypt on this site, and only ten years later another French architect Jacques Draud built another crypt here. Then two tombs became the basis for the new building. In 1931 a concrete foundation was made, and between 1932 and 1934 the church was built using reinforced concrete. The architect used the technique of thin concrete for the dome, which has a thickness of 45 centimeters on the base, but only 8 centimeters at the top.
The church is built in the style of art deco, in the evening when illuminated, this spectacle is simply fascinating.
