Description:
The monument to the fallen in 1914-1918 in Nice is located at the foot of the Castle Mountain. The location was not chosen by chance. From the mountain there is a wonderful view of the sea. On its slope there is an ancient cemetery, next to it are the ruins of an old castle. The mountain is removed from the main highways. Everything here contributes to relaxation and contemplation of the surrounding beauty.
The monument to the fallen is located near the old quarries that ensured the construction of urban facilities in the XVIII and XIX centuries. It was erected in honor of the 4,000 inhabitants of Nice who died during the First World War. Construction officially began in 1918, but for financial reasons was postponed until November 11, 1924.
The Cenotaph was designed by architect Roger Ceassal, author of the monument to Napoleon at Ajaccio and the Menton Casino. The reliefs were made by sculptor Alfred Jannio. Both sides of the monument are decorated with bas-reliefs representing infantry soldiers, artillery, cavalry, engineers, sailors and aviators. The monument is engraved with the names of those who died in that war, the names of those who died in World War II, Indochina and Algeria were added over time.
