Garibaldi Square

Place Garibaldi, Nice, France

Description:

Garibaldi Square is one of the oldest squares located in the north of the Old Town. In the middle of the 18th century, this place was a wasteland with destroyed fortifications.

In 1780, King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia decided to extend the route from Turin to Nice to ensure the passage of crews and carriages. Thus, on the site of an abandoned wasteland, the Triumphal Gate of the city appeared.

The square was decorated by the Italian architect Antonio Spinelli, thanks to whom the buildings in the Turin style were built. The chapel of the Holy Sepulcher, located in the southern part of the square, is made in the Baroque and Neoclassical style.

The square has changed several names. First - Parolière, then - Vittorio, Republic Square, Napoleon Square. It received its present name in 1870, in honor of the revolutionary Garibaldi.

The area plays an important role in the lives of citizens. Every year at the end of summer, a cattle fair is held here, various celebrations are held.
