Mani Tower
1 Place Guillaume Apollinaire, Les Jardins de la Fontaine, 30,000 Nî mes, France
Description:
The Tour de Manj tower, which is more than 30 meters high, stands on an octagonal base, the edges of which are uneven. This is due to the rather difficult terrain. Above the base rises the second tier, decorated in traditions characteristic of Tuscan architecture. Unfortunately, little remains of this decoration. In the Roman period, the tower had three tiers, but only ruins remained of the third. Inside the tower, a staircase has been reconstructed, the appearance of which is not quite combined with the ancient masonry of the walls.
After the borders of the city were significantly reduced in the Middle Ages, the tower remained outside, but did not lose its defensive significance. It became an important point of defense against the British during the Hundred Years War. Tour Manh was immortalized in popular verses, where it is said that one queen allegedly met her lover. And in 1601, one of the inhabitants of the city, who believed in the prediction of Nostradamus about the innumerable treasures of Nimes, organized excavations around the tower.
In the XIX century, the tower was used as a semaphore tower, but in 1843, as part of the program of "civilization" of the ruins of Nimes, order was restored here. Various exhibitions are held here. From the hill on which the tower is located, there is a beautiful view of the city.
